Temperatures in Austria were much higher than yesterday. Although the air temperature was 22 degrees, the runway temperature reached 48 degrees. Several events occurred during the session. Most notably, Williams’ rookie driver Nicholas Latifi crashed into the barriers in the first corner. Thereupon, the session was stopped with a red flag. As we entered the final part of the session, Romain Grosjean briefly went off the track. All of the drivers drove with medium or soft tyres. Ferrari drivers never drove with medium tires and instead used all soft tires. Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton did not leave the leadership to anyone today, just as he did yesterday. The British driver managed to do 1:04.130 on the soft tyre, placing first, 0.147 seconds ahead of teammate Valtteri Bottas. Hamilton thus finished first in all three practice sessions, while Mercedes was 1-2 in all practice sessions.
Max Verstappen had the third best time with Red Bull. The Dutch driver followed Hamilton 0.283 seconds behind with a time of 1:04,413 in the final section. Entering the final five minutes, Racing Point driver Sergio Perez finished 1:04,605 and continued Friday’s strong performance in fourth place. In the session where Ferrari drivers focused on soft tyres, Charles Leclerc finished fifth with 1:04.703 while Sebastian Vettel finished seventh with 1:04.851. Between these two was Alex Albon with 1:04,725. Racing Point driver Lance Stroll was eighth in the session, 0.3 seconds behind teammate Perez, while AlphaTauri driver Pierre Gasly was ninth. McLaren’s Lando Norris trailed Gasly by just 0.001 seconds. Although Renault drivers Esteban Ocon and Daniel Ricciardo were ahead at one point, they finished the session in 11th and 12th places.
