The 2020 Formula 1 season finally started with the Austrian GP held today. In the first training session, the first official session after a seven-month hiatus, the drivers made several laps. As soon as the session started, McLaren driver Carlos Sainz took the track and became the first lap of the new season. However, the air temperature was 18 degrees at the beginning and the runway temperature only reached 23 degrees. Due to the rain in the morning, there was wetness in various parts of the track. It also rained from time to time in the first half hour. That’s why some drivers lap on transitional tires. Drivers used all three dry-floor tires. There was no major incident during the session. There were pilots who had a blockage at the first corner on the cold track. Max Verstappen spun at the first corner and Pierre Gasly at the last corner. Romain Grosjean, on the other hand, only took the track and had to come to the garage due to brake problems. Grosjean was able to return to the track with only 1 minute before the end of the session.
The fastest lap within the session has consistently improved. The Racing Point drivers were in the top two at one point, but Lewis Hamilton managed to get below 1:05 in the final part of the session and was the fastest with 1:04,816. With this result, the six-time world champion completed the first training session of the 2020 season in first place. Valtteri Bottas was Hamilton’s closest follower, but failed to get below 1:05 and was second behind 0.356 seconds. Thus, Mercedes took the first two places. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen finished 1:05,418 towards the end of the session and finished third, 0.602 seconds behind. In the first session McLaren looked good, Carlos Sainz finished fourth, just 0.013 seconds behind Verstappen.
